I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I have worked as a tutor with several children on their reading, spelling and math skills. I worked as a UIL coach for creative writers in second grade. To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math.

This really depends on what the student seems to need. Some people are visual learners, others auditory, kinesthetic, etc. It is critical to ASK THE STUDENT what works for them! I've practiced law, worked in broadcasting, public relations and business. I love writing and am currently working on a libretto for a musical theatre piece. I also enjoy working with young women in a non-profit here in Austin, Texas. I love to work with creative and unusual passionate people! Also, I've taught ESL courses to adults and enjoyed meeting people from all over the world.

I try to avoid lecture in teaching. For me, personally, instruction comes from helping the student understand the material on their own without having to directly be told everything. This comes through in creative exercises that help the student to understand the concept better and to hold onto the idea much easier. I have experience teaching not only at the college level, but also for grades 6-12. I was an English teacher during my most recent stay in France and I've tutored Accounting at Houston Community College. As an English teacher, I taught not only grammar and comprehension specifically to students that had issues with the grammar of English, but I also was involved in teaching Shakespeare to the students as well as many different forms of English literature. In addition, I have acted as a French tutor for many years.

In my free time, I write music and stand-up comedy. I'm also currently developing and writing a potential science fiction TV series to pitch to production executives. I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. However, my friends were struggling. They hated me a bit for how easy it came to me. I decided to tutor them and help them with homework assignments and studying. They ended up doing very well on the exams, allowing them to secure a 3.0 or higher in the course. I also had to regular help my classmates out with more complex problems in Physics. I was not so much tutoring as working together with them on the homework, but still, it involved clear explanation and a thorough knowledge of the subject matter. I always liked playing up my quir

I prefer a very laid back, informal environment when I teach. I can adapt very easily, and only require that my students respect me and try their best. I can help them with the rest I have tutored over 50 children and teens, ages 3-14, in various subjects. With my youngest students, I have helped them improve their reading comprehension and ability markedly. My older students have been teens preparing for college, and as I have done extremely well on my SATs and ACT (scores can be supplied upon request), I have been able to help them improve in that field as well.

I play with the English Language. The English Language is my playground. Tutor in the Austin Area for 10 years. Vendor in 'Tutorial Services' for a State Agency for five years. Helped students from 16 to 46 get to where they need to be. Helped students to achieve their goals, and become more efficient with their time and their abilities. I have a knack of making the complicated simple. Experienced, I can easily break down subjects to their essence. Confident and charismatic, I can foster a sense of achievement and self-worth in a student who is struggling with self esteem or test anxiety issues. Familiar with subjects, I am an expert at many levels and across many disciplines. I am the total tutor, who still has much to learn himself.
